House Concerts
A House Concert is a musical event that presents folk music where it is often most comfortable - in someone's home. These intimate concerts can be found in hundreds of homes all across the country. This edition of Cyberfolk is dedicated to the House Concert - how to find one to attend, and even how to host your own.
A good introduction to house concerts can be found at the Internet Folk Project, or ifolk, at http://ifolk.org. Click on the "House Concert" link and you'll find a great introductory article, as well as a link that will do a search for all house concerts listed on Musi-Cal.
Musi-Cal seems to have the most extensive listing of house concerts. From the main page, http://www.musi-cal.com go to the General Search Form. Then pick the keyword "house concert" from the list.
About.com is developing a nice folk music section at http://folkmusic.about.com . Click on "House Concerts" and "Recent Articles" to read about how to begin hosting your own house concerts.
Houseconcerts.com was created by folks who host a house concert series in Texas. So far, they've compiled a list of house concerts in 17 states. Check it out at http://www.houseconcerts.com/ .
On his music links page, Alan Rowoth presents a nice list of house concert related links at http://alanr.lpl.org/musiclinks.html .
A sort of Cyber House Concert takes place each Monday evening (at 9:00pm Central) from the living room of a house on Whidbey Island, Washington. It is an informal 30 minute RealAudio interactive event. The cyber-audience can send in comments during the show! If you miss the Monday concert, you can listen to a past "Living Room Shows" from the archives at anytime. This site is a wonderful mix of technology and homespun music. Now and then they present a concert from a larger venue - check out the complete Christine Lavin concert! Have a listen at http://www.electricedge.com/testingtesting/ .
