Cyberfolk Winter 1998

Finding Folk Recordings

As a fan of folk music, you probably already know how difficult
it can be to find recordings that are outside of the commercial
mainstream. This edition of Cyberfolk provides some cyber
suggestions for sleuthing out the music you're looking for.

For starters, try your local folk-oriented music store. A good
sampling of such establishments may be found on the Fox Valley
Folk Music Society's site at
http://www.mcs.com/~hammerd/fvfs/bksninst.html

If you can't locate your recording locally, try mail order.
Elderly Instruments in Michigan has an extensive selection of
recordings, which can be browsed at
http://www.elderly.com/recordings/recordings.htm

Tunes can be previewed and ordered on-line at Tunes - The
Intelligent Music Source. This site has an extensive folk
section, representing labels such as Smithsonian-Folkways,
Rounder and Red House. Give this site a listen at

Mabel's Music Shop specializes in small, independent label
recordings. Find them at
http://www.futuris.net/mabels/

The Global Electronic Music Marketplace is, as their home page
says, a marketplace for music with more than 1,752,351 new and
used recordings of all kinds from 1246 retailers, collectors and
labels around the world. It can be found at
http://gemm.com/

If you're looking for a particular song, but don't know the
artist or if there is a recording available, try doing some
research at the Folk Music Index at Johns Hopkins University,
http://milton.mse.jhu.edu:8001/research/folkindex/index.htm
Or check out Folk Book's Discography Page at

Many record labels are now on line, including Folk Legacy Records
at http://www.folklegacy.com and Rounder Records Group at

the stories on "All things Considered"? Information is at
